∂LOT Mr. Edward Shaw↓Office of the Provost∞
Dear Ed:
This is to request a waiver of search so that Mr. Ralph Gorin
can be hired as Manager of LOTS. Mr Gorin is uniquely qualified
for the job, and there is a shortage of time.
Since the LOTS low overhead time-sharing system is to be
staffed by just three full time people, the Manager must combine
technical ability to run a DECSystem 20 computer installation
to interact successfully and tactfully with faculty (He won't
be able to give them all the service they request), and to get
the most useful work from student volunteers.
Mr. Gorin has been Chief System Programmer at the Artificial
Intelligence Laboratory for five years. He has just completed the
revision of the AI Lab's operating system to incorporate the KL-10
processor recently donated by Digital Equipment Corporation.
This involved extensive changes to every part of the system
and was accomplished in less time and with many fewer bugs than
previous major changes.
Mr. Gorin has had considerable experience in supervising
students in programming projects. Besides that the Stanford
Computer Club, the students who played a large role in persuading
the University to establish LOTS, consider Gorin their candidate
for manager. He has already played a major role in LOTS planning.
He normally works considerably more than 40 hours a week
and expects to continue the practice.
As the time for installation of the computer approaches, the number
of managerial decisions that must be made increases, and I, as director,
need a Manager to make them.
Detailed job descriptions are enclosed, but we propose putting
off hiring the Systems Programmer, because it may turn out
that the job should be more oriented towards interaction with users.
